David Surface lives in the Hudson River Valley of New York. He is the author of two collections of short fiction, Terrible Things, published by Black Shuck Books, and These Things That Walk Behind Me from Lethe Press. He is also co-author with Julia Rust of Angel Falls, a crossover/YA novel from YAP Books/Haverhill House Publications. A second novel, Saving Thornwood, also written with Julia Rust, is due out from YAP Books in July, 2025.
David's stories have appeared in Shadows & Tall Trees, Supernatural Tales, Nightscript, Phantom Drift, Morpheus Tales, and The Tenth Black Book of Horror, and in literary journals including North American Review, Crazyhorse, Fiction, and Doubletake. His stories have been anthologized in Darkest Minds from Dark Minds Press, Ghost Highways from Midnight Street Press, Twisted Book of Shadows from Twisted Publishing/Haverhill House Publications, and Crooked Houses: Tales of Cursed and Haunted Dwellings from Egaeus Press. A story co-authored with Julia Rust, ‘TallDarkAnd’, appears in the Swan River Press anthology, Uncertainties III, and his stories 'The Devil Will Be at the Door' and 'Eyes Like Small Black Stones' were selected by Ellen Datlow for Best New Horror of the Year #13 and #15. David was a regular contributor to Black Static Magazine where his column ‘One Good Story’ appeared in the Case Notes section. He is the recipient of a Fellowship in Nonfiction Literature from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and was a nominee for the NYFA Prize. His stories have received long-list Honorable Mentions in Ellen Datlow’s Best Horror of the Year, Volumes 7 and 8, SFEditors Picks, and have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize in fiction. |
